Grimlord - Dolce Vita Sath-anas Review

back to reviews

Artist: Grimlord

Album: Dolce Vita Sath-anas

Released: 2009

A mixture of styles and genres: Heavy Power Metal

Grimlord isn't just a grimword in the spirit of many bands of the 80s, which indeed played quite nice Heavy. Not only the name of the band, but also the veiled word 'sath-anas' in the title of the album, obscure art-cover and a warning "not for children under 15 - attention oversensitive" on the cover - all these implies that we have come across not just an ordinary Heavy Metal band, but something tougher.
No, don't be afraid, admirers of Heavy Metal, it is not an extreme Death/Black, it is still Heavy, but not nice and kind, as most frequently it is, but Heavy with a dark atmosphere, which Celtic Frost are noted for, for instance. I don't know why, but the bands Brimstone and Cryhavoc come to my mind as an example from the modern music history. Their music also suggested a rather somber atmosphere, although it had absolutely nothing to do with any extreme Metal styles.
What is so special in Grimlord's music apart from the combination of the common Heavy Metal (with the elements of Speed, Power, even with some Thrash elements) and the atmosphere coming somewhere from depths of Black Metal? Instrumentals! I have always respected bands, which used not only a couple of guitar solos in a song, but also played completely instrumental compositions, which reveal the talent of the musicians, who can do more than just accompanying the singer, much more amply.
Well, finally I want to say that if you are a fan of traditional Heavy Metal of the 80s with some non-traditional trends, which add to the band's uniqueness, you will enjoy Grimlord's album "Dolce Vita Sath-anas" very much.
