Asylum Pyre - Natural Instinct? Review

back to reviews

Artist: Asylum Pyre

Album: Natural Instinct?

Released: 2009

A mixture of styles and genres: Melodic Power Metal

Review:

It is not difficult to describe such albums, when the band is well-known - you know everything about them, they have their own special things about them, which showed themselves long ago, and you only have to sit and write something like "dudes, you're great, way to go!", or "you wankers, one and the same thing again!". But it turns out different, when it comes to new bands, as we are just going to discover something interesting...
Let's start... Asylum Pyre position themselves as Melodic Prog/Power, and this is the first reason, why I take interest in this band a priori.
It is the case with many bands that the first song(s) characterize(s) the whole style, and sometimes it turns out to be almost the best song of the album. But it is different with the Asylum Pyre's album called "Natural Instinct?"! The first tracks here are Melodic Gothic in the style of Antichrisis (of the time of the 'A Legacy of Love' album) or Angizia, plus female+male vocals, just like Angizia has it. The main thing is not to stop and keep on listening, because music is slowly getting different, it turns into Melodic Power/Heavy, something in the style of Nightwish, Edenbridge, etc. (the lead voice is female), but more powerful, not like the ballad-like and sickly-sweet Heavy played by many alike bands. Male vocals recede into the background and are like growl or background male voices. The abundance of guitars just emphasizes the music inherence in Power or Heavy, and keyboards intensify the impression of it being 'symphonic'. The album contains ballads or ballad-like tracks, and it is primarily them that give to Asylum Pyre the affinity to the Nightwish-like bands or Antichrisis. Once again, remembering the abundance of guitars works, it would be not bad to mark rather interesting guitar parts along with simple, popular and standard riffs, which are "classical" for the most Heavy/Power/etc. bands. We may try to attribute such parts to something personal with regard to Asylum Pyre.
Well, does this band have potential for development? It does. Do they need to change anything in the music? I don't know, we have to compare this album with the new ones, so, the future will tell. Does the band need to experiment? Yes.
