Evergrey - Solitude - Dominance - Tragedy Review

back to reviews

Artist: Evergrey

Album: Solitude - Dominance - Tragedy

Released: 1999

A mixture of styles and genres: Dark Power Progressive Metal

Review:

Relatively new band on Power / Progressive Metal scene. Though it is their 2nd album. The first one AFAIK didn't receive much attention from metal audience.

The album "Solitude*Dominance*Tragedy" is probably a concept work. (I haven't got into this concept much yet, but according to lyrics and song titles I suppose it has some connections to UFO themes, nosferatus, summoning spirits, deads, curses, etc.) If I'm not mistaken, this album was released on Tilo Wolff's (Lacrimosa) label "Hall Of Sermon", but it has very few aspects to deal with gothic music.

The vocals are very specific, sometimes it may seem that the singer is a bit weak and he tries to scream instead of singing, but such way of vocal work fits great this album's mysterious and depressive atmosphere and because of it I give them 10 of 10 for the vocal work.

On this album I've found amazing combination of keyboards and guitars, I mean this music is equally saturated with great melodic guitar riffs and solos as well as with symphonic outstanding keyboards (imitated violins, flutes, pianos, etc.). The overall music condition on this album is very different and it changes from agressive symphonic Power Metal to silent calm beautiful depressive and melodic tunes (it seems that they prevail here). I'd love to describe the music by comparing it to other bands, but it's very difficult for me because the music is very original. The far comparision may look like Dream Theater + Stratovarius + Sentenced + Crimson Glory + something very special. I can for sure define this album as the best of Power / Progressive Metal albums of 1999 and one of the best of all albums of 1999. It really rocks my world.

Great work guys! Keep on rockin'!
