Lefay - The Seventh Seal Review

back to reviews

Artist: Lefay

Album: The Seventh Seal

Released: 1999

A mixture of styles and genres: Thrash Power Progressive Metal

This is the new name of Morgana LeFay band. The reason they've changed their name is that the band has broke up with Black Mark Productions. But the problem was that the guys had the conctract with this label and it was decided at the court if they wanna leave they should change their name and never use Morgana Lefay name again (even in advertising of their new album). So, now we are dealing with Lefay. The lineup has changed too. The guys from the previous album "Maleficium" are: Charles Rytkonen - vocals, Tony Eriksson - guitars. The new guys are: Peter Grehn - guitar, Micke Asentorp - bass, Robin Engstrom - drums. The band is from Sweden, and they are playing unique Thrash Metal with Progressive tunes.

Progressive doesn't mean here "lots of keyboards" (i'd say "no keyboards at all"). It means their unique sound with their own ideas and sounds. The album "The Seventh Seal" is amazing mixing of anger, sentimentality, and even some fatality. The mood I'm experiencing during listening to this album can be compared to a motley nightmare. With the word "motley" I mean impregnations of different feelings that can be experienced by a human being. But the difference from the nightmares I see in my dreams is that in this nightmare I know that it is totally doomed. No happy end. But I wish to come through this nightmare to feel every smell of it, to touch every wall of the old and dark castles, to kill everybody I'm not satisfied with, to bring my grief to the end and to die with it by the mighty hand of someone, someone who rules my life... And maybe if I'm lucky to escape his powerful hand, I'm doomed to wander around this dirty world in solving my own problems...

THAT IS FILLING UP THE AIR..." łâLefay 1999.

And in my dreams that are inside this nightmare I see precious angel, who tries to save my life...but all his efforts are in vain... Because only in fairytales white angels save praying doomed sinners. And this is not fairytale. This nightmare is reality, and I can't escape reality... Vocals of Charles Rytkonen remind me sometimes Jon Oliva of Savatage, but he has that sound in his voice in which definition you can't mistake: sometimes hysterical, sometimes sentimental and melodic, sometimes doomy. The guitar men are outstanding. The solos and riffs are just amazing, I can't even describe what beautiful sounds they are producing. The music is genious and insane at the same time. Probably the best album of 1999.
