Mullmuzzler - Keep It to Yourself Review

back to reviews

Artist: Mullmuzzler

Album: Keep It to Yourself

Released: 1999

A mixture of styles and genres: Melodic Progressive Metal

The project of His Ytsejam James LaBrie of Dream Theater. James LaBrie collaborated on this album with Mike Mangini on drums (Steve Vai, Extreme); Mike Keneally on guitars (Beer For Dolphins, Steve Vai); Brian Beller on bass (Beer For Dolphins); and Matt Guillory on keyboards (Dali's Dilemma). I'm writing this review after listening to the Dream Theater's outstanding "Scenes From A Memory" album. And because of it, I can say that approximately 60% of LaBrie's solo project is a prelude to DT's "SFAM" album. I guess that other 40% are not DT-like because some songs on this album were written in cooperation with guys from Shadow Gallery (G.Wehrkamp, C.Cadden-James, B.Allman) and a guy from Magellan (Trent Gardner) With Gallerians is everything O.K. The music written with these guys reminds some Shadow Gallery tunes ofcourse and has some unique sound (which is the result of this cooperation ofcourse); but music composed with Trent Gardner is very weird! There are 2 tracks on the CD which were written with Trent. The 1st one "Beelzebubba" has original trombones(!!!) in it. And the 2nd one "As A Man Thinks" has got that modern industrial sound (but it sounds really great with James' vocals!). All the music on this album is very complex. It is saturated with beautiful and mighty keyboards, great guitar riffs/solos and ofcourse good drums and bass lines. James LaBrie is doing his best! I mean his vocals... They are amazing. This album is very recommended to all the Progressive / Melodic Metal music fans as well as to other Metal music orientations fans.
