Storyteller's Rain - Storyteller's Rain Review

back to reviews

Artist: Storyteller's Rain

Album: Storyteller's Rain

Released: 2000

A mixture of styles and genres: Melodic Blues Progressive Hard Rock

The full title of this album is "Storyteller's Rain - A Rock-Musical by Ferdy Doernberg". If you don't know (or don't remember) who Ferdy D. is, I'm going to remind you - he's keyboard and guitar player for the band called Rough Silk (he also took part in Roland Grapow's solo albums, and in bands such as Desperados, Crimson Glory, Gamma Ray). The other two main members of this project are Ralf Schwertner (Rough Silk), and Mike Terrana (Rage, and other great bands). As the booklet says, Ferdy except for the lead vocals, plays here following instruments: slide- and rhythm-guitars, piano, hammond-organ, pedal steel, lap steel, lead guitars, dobro, keyboards, accordeon, trumpet, mandolin. Ralf plays bass guitar, trombone and harmonica. And Mike plays all the drums and percussion. Except for Ferdy, Ralf and Mike there are many guest musicians and singers on this album: Axel Rudi Pell, Roland Grapow, Michael Weikath, Tom Angelripper, Uli Kusch, Martin Hugh and 8 more people. I think that is enough about the band lineup, let's talk about music. When I have finished 1st listening through this album my first impression about this album was - Progressive Rock/Metal with Jazz and Blues influences. And if you ask me about comparision, I'd say that while listening to this album I have experienced the same feelings I have experienced when I was listening to Roger Waters's (ex-Pink Floyd) album "Amused To Death", but this album has a bit more metall-ish sound and has more different instruments. Musically, this album is a mix between Rough Silk ('Circle Of Pain' era), Savatage ('Streets' era), Pink Floyd and Dire Straits, so it is very interesting mixing. Ferdy, Ralf and Mike are playing all those instruments listed above just perfect! So if you like soft progressive rock/metal I'd strongly recommend this album for listening.
