Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Beethoven's Last Night Review

back to reviews

Artist: Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Album: Beethoven's Last Night

Released: 2000

A mixture of styles and genres: Melodic Progressive Rock

Review:

First of all, I would like to thank Chris Caffery of Savatage and Adam Lind who helped me in getting this CD. Thank you very much, guys! It has been 2 years since TSO's last release and I've been waiting for their next album with impatience. For those who are not familiar with Trans-Siberian Orchestra's music I'm going to say that this is the symphonic rock opera with many instruments (guitars, bass, drums, pianos, keyboards, cellos, violins, violas) which are cooperating with each other very good (I mean there's no emptiness or overload or in the sound, everything is perfect), with beautifully arranged vocals and choirs. Musically this CD contains material that will be interesting not only for Prog/Melodic Metal audience, this CD is going to win hearts of many people, even if they are not familiar with rock/metal music, for it combines classical music with Rock music. For those who are familiar with this project I'd like to tell that on this album Jon Oliva and Zak Stevens are singing! (Jon appears even on 2 tracks, still the Mountain King!) All the members of Savatage have done great work on this CD, I can even feel the sincerity and warmth coming right from their hearts through the speakers and into my heart producing in my soul unspeakable feelings...

This album is not a sequel to the 1st and 2nd albums (those 2 were Christmas-concept CDs), and, as you can see from the title, it is dedicated to the last night in Ludwig von Beethoven's life with some mysterious impregnations (for there are such characters as Mephistopheles, Fate, Muses, spirit of Mozart etc) and it contains amazing syphonic rock interpretations of Beethoven's and Mozart's compositions as well as music that was written exclusively for the concept story.

I must say that with every TSO release my comprehension of world of music is turning upside down, I mean the things the guys from TSO do with classical music and Rock music (adding professional vocalists) turn for me into something really new and charming, and because of that I want to listen to their albums more and more, this album is not an exception, frankly it has surpassed every album I ever heard in this genre.

The CD contains big booklet with the great concept story (you will be surprised), lyrics and many credits. Definitely one of the greatest albums of year 2000, and the best in its genre.P
