Empyria - Behind Closed Doors Review

back to reviews

Artist: Empyria

Album: Behind Closed Doors

Released: 1996

A mixture of styles and genres: Power Progressive Metal

Review:

These Canadians are not well-known but their music is worthy of your intent attention.

If you are a true judge of excellent Progressive Power metal you'll find a beautiful piece of this style in them. The first mysterious and at the same time strict song ("The Test of Time") with flamenco guitars and rhythm changes forces you to remember such bands as Conception and Iced Earth. The second song demonstrates us the same intellectual American Progressive metal without excessive sentimentality. The third song ("World's Apart") has something cold and strange from Fates Warning and Sieges Even. "Lost in The Shadows" begins with romantic guitar sounds and refers us to Fates Warning with their "Perfect Symmetry" and "Parallels". "To Live Again" is faster and simpler than previous songs. "Solace" is a splendid acoustic guitar intro of the next song and can be compared to such acoustic pieces of Queensryche. "The Lighter Side of Darkness" is again a small Progressive Metal masterpiece with sudden transparent acoustic guitar insertions - a varied, intricate and unusual one.

"Secret Visions" is a gloomy track in the same progressive spirit with bass guitar and guitar solos and rhythm changes. The next song is a sad semi-ballad "Seasons of Change". "Behind Closed Doors" resembles me Sieges Even in something. "The Calling" is an example of ascetic intelligent progressive music.
