Mahogany Head Grenade - Return to the Point of Departure Review

back to reviews

Artist: Mahogany Head Grenade

Album: Return to the Point of Departure

Released: 2013

A mixture of styles and genres: Metal

Mahogany Head Grenade is Instrumental Progressive, and I have always said that music without words is more than music. We will not go down in history to search for reasons why music needed words, let us just state that this new band, which immediately sharpens your attention to the complexity of the music, not the zombie rhymes, is worthy of special attention.
Honestly, this album reminds me more of a guitarist solo work. Not because the bass guitar and drums are missing, can not be heard or are plainness, just usually similar-sounding albums belong to the guitarists, modestly naming their projects with their own proud names.
What can be said about the music: it is difficult, which implies that the Everest will not be conquered from the first time, you need to listen it several times, at different times, under different mood, working or resting. Guitar style can be described as being from the area Satriani / Vai + slightly Friedman, but the guitar sound heavier than the mentioned guitarists. The presence of tones in music is not foreseen, and some unusual, say, or unaccustomed sound indicates experimentalism of the music. No, it is spiritually in any case not Dream Theater, but rather a weighted Bozzio-Levin-Stevens.
What else does the band need? Although there is a variety of music and this variety of one-way, both stylistically and emotionally. It seems to me, the rhythm section should have a chance to be shown more individuality. Is vocal needed? As an experiment - yes, but won't the band become 'one of many' instead of 'one of a kind'?
