Helloween - The Dark Ride Review

back to reviews

Artist: Helloween

Album: The Dark Ride

Released: 2000

A mixture of styles and genres: Metal Power Metal

YEEEEEHAAAA!!! Happy Happy Helloween! Finally, the new Helloween album! Frankly, I didn't know what to expect from Helloween after definitely not-so-good "Better Than Raw" and "Metal Jukebox" releases. I even had some thoughts that Helloween is slowly going down. BUT NO!!! NO F#CKiNG WAY!!! HELLOWEEN IS ALIVE! And look what they have created.

The cover-art of the album has only dark grey colors, and concept of the cover-art looks very nice and kind of serious (remember KotSK, TotO cover arts?). The lineup has not changed since 1994: Andi Deris - vocals, Michael Weikath - guitars, Roland Grapow - guitars, Markus Grosskopf - bass, Uli Kusch - drums. This 'Mighty Pumpkins Team' comes up with new blasting release. Talking about music I would say that the musician's potential has surely grown up. All members of the band took part in song writing, though Andi's work is dominating. The musical material on this album is very different: from classical and Helloween-ish power speed metal tunes to dark heavy metal passages with atmospheric backgrounds. Helloween's trade mark riffs and solos, many keyboards (mostly background). One of the songs even sounds a bit industrial, but it is really cool and that kind of sound is very fresh. To say that musicians are doing their jobs great is to say nothing. Andi Deris sings very good. Seems like he has worked on his vocals. Though he sometimes screams or is about to growl (rarely), but it is concerned, I guess, with musical material. Sometimes vocals are choirs, but it's hard for me to determine whether it sings only Andi or it is the whole band.

If you ask me to compare this album with other albums I would say somekind of following: Helloween "Master Of The Rings" + Helloween "The Time Of The Oath" + Pink Cream 69 "Games People Play", but I wouldn't describe this album this way, because it is pretty original, unique and has great innovatory ideas. The Pumpkins are back to kick major ass!!!

If you haven't got this album yet - run to your local store, buy it, put it into your Audio System and prepare for THE DARK RIDE with Helloween! And I assure you - it will be very interesting.
