Jacobs Dream - Dominion of Darkness Review

back to reviews

Artist: Jacobs Dream

Album: Dominion of Darkness

Released: 2008

A mixture of styles and genres: Power Heavy Metal

I have known Jacobs Dream long ago, I have all their albums (I will not discuss the first three here, of course). This band has been existing a long time and does not require meticulous review, as it is not a band of the former schoolboys, who decided to play Power Metal somehow (what if we succeed?), they are veteran musicians, who play serious music and do not afraid of anything.
Well, again we plunge into the atmosphere of epic US Power, not very speedy, but really powerful and aggressive. Vocals of Chaz Bond are in perfect harmony with the atmosphere of the album; his deep and rich voice seems to have been made for such music. I can draw a parallel between Manilla Road's and Jacob Dream's complete vocal-musical-epic harmony for comparison, I can even hear some similarity in the voices of Mark Shelton and Chaz Bond.
Guitars - the guitar sound has become more solid and aggressive, at least, I have noticed it from the very first songs; something has changed in the guitar part, something has become heavier, or more technical, maybe, but something has really become more interesting!
The music itself is full of interesting moments. This relates not only to the thrilling vocal roulades and very interesting guitar solos, but to the music itself, both to rather catchy choruses and just various song elements, which sometimes distract attention - wow, what is that interesting thing I hear?
I don't know whether it is an accidental coincidence or confirmation, but this CD is self production. I have noticed long ago that self production is sometimes better that albums released by the pompous labels. A mature band can go all out and play music the way it wants without being dictated by the label's management. For me this album is another confirmation of this fact. I was instantly impressed by this album, and I had to listen to the previous albums released by Metal Blade once again so as to make a more a less stable opinion.
