Royal Hunt - Fear Review

back to reviews

Artist: Royal Hunt

Album: Fear

Released: 1999

A mixture of styles and genres: Power Metal

Review:

The new album from Andre Andersen & Co. I've got Japanese version of this album but there's nothing special on it (no bonus-tracks or multimedia additions). From my friend - huge Royal Hunt fan - I've found out that they didn't plan any bonuses at all!

If you don't know, the band lineup has changed. New singer is John West (ex-Artension). DC Cooper was fired and has got his own project. I like John's vocals much more than Henry Brockmann (on "Land Of Broken Hearts" album), DC Cooper and Kenny Lubcke (Andre's solo project). His voice's abilities is way wider than those guys' voices. Back to the music. What we have got here is the typical Andre Andersen's work: melodic metal with progressive sound.

Nothing special. I'd define it as the mixing of old Royal Hunt albums with Andre Andersen's solo album "Changing Skin". The only remarkable things are John West's vocals and the quality of sound. Andre Andersen has improved his recorder's abilities and came up with great stereo sound: the keyboards have very professional and different sound as well as other instruments. Good and catchy melodies, great and soft sound, musicians are very good, but still no new remarkable musical ideas. Die-hard Royal Hunt fans will go insane listening to this album. I strongly doubt that for usual intelligent music listener, who have experienced all the previous albums of Mr Andersen, this album may give any special feelings. But if you haven't heard anything from this band before, I strongly recommend this album, because considering it separately from other albums from Andre Andersen it can be surely defined as a masterpiece.

Summary:
Vocals:10.00 of 10
Instruments:10.00 of 10
Skill:9.00 of 10
Originality:6.00 of 10
TOTAL:8.75 of 10
