Revolution Renaissance - New Era Review

back to reviews

Artist: Revolution Renaissance

Album: New Era

Released: 2008

A mixture of styles and genres: Melodic Speed Power Metal

Speaking about Melodic Power Metal one may suppose that there cannot be anything new here, and all is clear a-priori. Everything what had to be created has been created already, and the bands can only experiment within the set frames and standards. However, Revolution Renaissance, Timo Tolkki's new project, proves that it is not necessary to invent anything new to be special. Fans of Stratovarius, there is no need to be upset, because now you are rewarded with a real "crown jewel", a masterpiece called New Era, the first album of the Revolution Renaissance project released recently and featuring such outstanding singers, as Michael Kiske and Tobias Sammet.
The album consists of a standard set of fast, slow, mid-tempo songs and two ballads, listening to which it starts to seem that Mr. Tolkki has breathed a new life into melodic power metal. Each song gives you a sense of freshness and unicity. The structure of almost all songs is the same: the verse - the chorus - the solo - the chorus. Indeed, unlike the title track, most songs on the album contain only one verse, while the choruses are interrupted by the main guitar solo followed by an improvisation, like in Last Night on Earth, a mid-tempo song, which, in my opinion, is a pinnacle of the album along with another mid-tempo song called I Did It My Way.
The album stars with a fast killer track Heroes, where the drum double bass is distinctly audible, like in the other fast track called "Glorious and Divine". We Are Magic, a mid tempo track performed by a very good singer Pasi Rantanen, reminds of Helloween's Power, while Angel, a beautiful ballad performed by Kiske, has a strong resemblance to A Tale That Was Not Right. Eden Is Burning and Born Upon the Cross are slow heavy riff-based songs, and the latter is really dark and atmospheric due to its eerie chorus, slow tempo and heaviness.
Overall, I want to mark that the tuny melodies and beautiful guitar solos are the strongest point of the album. You can hear no repetitiveness here. But actually, the music does not have to be described - you have to listen to get convinced.
