Waterland - demo Review

back to reviews

Artist: Waterland

Album: demo

Released: 2008

A mixture of styles and genres: Melodic Speed Power Metal

What is common between the words "waterland" and "skylark"? Well, nature, for instance, motion, river, field, bla-bla-bla. But if we change the wording of the question and ask what is common between the bands Waterland and Skylark, we will find much more direct coincidences.
Let's say about Waterland at first: it is Miguel Gomes (ex-Oratory), his friend Bruno Gomes and Marco Alves - Oratory's singer, two voices and Miguel with the rest of the instruments - that is the whole band that recorded this demo. I shall remind that Oratory play Melodic Power in the style of Italian bands like Rhapsody, or Spanish bands like Dark Moor, for instance (Oratory's basic vocals are female vocals, after all). Waterland follow the same trend and play Italian/Spanish-like Power Metal, they bear a huge resemblance to Skylark, the band, which plays Italian Melodic Power Metal with almost the same keyboards sound. But still, there is a most essential difference between Waterland and Skylark: Waterland gets out of two singers, one guitarist-keyboard player what Skylark gets out of the whole band. That is, there is a big probability that Waterland will play a really more worthwhile Power Metal, if it becomes a whole band with complete rhythm section.
Currently the band represents a project with the keyboards, the vocals and with the guitars, a kind of the project typical for newborn bands with a bit poor sound and not very special music yet. As to the voice parts, I liked them. Two singers on one project is a very good combination. It may save any album and distract one's attention from say the lack of originality, outshadow the bad (demo) sound, etc. What else do you need - good and beautiful singing, and if there are two different voices - to hell with the rest instruments!
Well, I don't know how the band's sound and music will develop in future. I shall only hope that it will be at least not worse than Oratory's, but I want it to be much better than Oratory's!
